Lymphoedema is a chronic condition which occurs as a result of failure of the lymphatic system to drain lymphatic fluid from various areas of the body. It results in swelling in the affected areas due to lymphatic fluid accumulation, most commonly in a limb.
Lymphoedema may occur as a result of acquired damage to the lymphatic system, particularly following surgery and treatment for cancer. It may also be seen when the lymphatic system is not fully developed and fails to adequately move fluid from the affected limb/limbs.
Not all patients with Lymphoedema require active treatment, but many require ongoing specialised compression garment prescription, which can only be provided by a registered Lymphoedema therapist. At Melton Health the clinician is a registered nurse trained in providing specialised complex physical therapy treatment and the measurement of compression garments.A lymphoedema exercise group is also available at Melton Health during school terms to those attending for Lymphodema services. The group incorporates exercise and education sessions targeted at self-management.
